Students in my fall 2015 digital marketing class launched an Instagram campaign to promote the Ooligan Press launch of A Series of Small Maneuvers.

TOPICS IN DIGITAL MARKETING FOR BOOK PUBLISHERS

Scamming the New York Times Bestseller List
Media Watch: best practices in social media book marketing
    Social Media Skills: hands-on tutorial
Paid, earned and owned media; decision funnels in book pub
Amateur Creativity: #Shelvies, BookTubers, and Goodreads Reviews
    Spreadable Media theory and practice
Literary festivals and network theory, with special focus on the Portland Book Festival (formerly “Wordstock”) Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018.
Measuring the value of literary prizes
    Book Metadata: discoverability and irregularities

This class blends hands-on, lab-based learning and scholarly research about book publishing and digital marketing. In lab, students learn best authoring practices by making digital assets and learning how to load them into a spreadsheet that feeds distribution software; they collaborate to prototype campaigns for frontlist books; they analyze and write metadata; and gauge sentiment on a Twitter hashtag of a literary festival.

Our main textbook will be Spreadable Media: Creating Value and Meaning in a Networked Culture, by Henry Jenkins, Sam Ford and Joshua Green.
